With winter slowly but surely coming to a close (in theory, at least), we look forward to summer and the opportunity to swap the treadmill for the open road.
Cape Town has an amazing running culture and with the warmer weather, comes some amazing races that can be enjoyed by runners of all fitness levels.
I’ve just about finished my Hockey season and have started doing some short training runs to get back in the game – here are some of the races that I most look forward to in the next couple of weeks and months.
The Cell C Day of Races – 11 September 2016
The Cell C Day of Races is about finding your fit, whether you’re a runner, boxer or slack liner this race is for you! We all enjoy the sport of fitness so find your fit by choosing your wave a start time for your 5km loop through the city. We’re not aiming for first places we’re aiming for PB’s but most importantly we’re heading for fun! Dress up or dress down, dress to your wave or dress like a clown, whatever you do make sure you follow us on social media, share your experience and stand a chance to WIN a wonderful array of prizes.
This race sounds like quite a laugh and will be a good warm-up to judge my fitness levels going into the Cape Town Marathon 10km.

Cape Town Marathon – 18 September 2016
- 42.2 km Marathon
- 22 km Peace Trail Run
- 12 km Peace Trail Run
- 10 km Peace Run/Walk
- 4.2 km Fun Run
Last year I missed out on this one as I had a wedding the previous evening. Running after boozing is not something I am very fond of. The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is a prestigious global city race open to a range of running enthusiasts from elite athletes to social runners. Along the spectacular route, you will take in the famous natural beauty of Cape Town’s mountains and sea, as well as many of the city’s great attractions.
Personally, I will be running the 10km race, and will also be doing it for a good cause. To learn more about how you can help me raise some money for Connect Sports Academy, click here.

2016 Gun Run – 16 October 2016
- 21 km half-marathon
Another race for everyone! Last year I missed out on doing the 21km due to bad planning on my behalf – the Warrior Race was the day before and there was no way I could complete both. So I opted for the Gun Run 10km on the Sunday after doing the Warrior on the Saturday.
The Gun Run offers the usual amazing views of Cape Town, while adding heaps of fun and adventure. People of all shapes, sizes and ages take part every year and the vibe is always awesome.
This year, I accepted @MrCPT’s challenge and will complete the 21km with him and some mates.

The Colour Run – 12 November 2016
I like to call this the Social Media Run, because people only really do it to post photos of themselves looking like rainbows. The Colour Run returns to Cape Town on 12 November so grab your tutus, your friends, your running shoes (or running slops) and get ready for 5kms of pure rainbow fun.
This has been a run that I would still like to do, but at R250 for entrance, I’d rather buy my own paint and run in my local park, or just keep my clothes clean.
