Sometimes I go by the name on my ID – Harold Johnson. Socially I go by the name that has been with me for many years – Potz. But the name that gives me the most joy… is the name Coach.
That’s what about 50 + kids call me on a Monday, Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Currently I oversee about 25 boys and 25 girls at Tramway Football Club in Cape Town.
My boys have been invited to partake in the Gothia World Youth Cup – it’s the largest Youth tournament globally with approximately 1700 teams taking part in the tournament from 80 nations from all over the world.
My plight and reason for coming out of writing-retirement and writing this piece, is that many of my boys come from impoverished backgrounds, or their parents can’t afford to send them overseas. So I’m here, asking for help.
I’m asking for you, your company, your peers and mates, to have a look at your budgets and donate anything that you can towards our goal to send these deserving kids to Sweden.
This will be a once in-a-lifetime opportunity for many of these boys. It really could shape the destiny of some of these boys who only know the community that they live in. A community filled with drugs, gangsterism and poverty.
This experience will show these boys that there’s so much more to life than this – through the power of Football, and sport as a whole, we can change these kids’ lives forever.
In total we need roughly R260 000, this includes the following:
- Training kits
- Match kits
You and people you may know, could add to that. Any donation could be so instrumental in achieving our goal, and if you cannot donate right now, maybe you can share this post on your social pages – the next big donation could be hiding on your timeline.
I am in the process of setting up a Thundafund account, but if you would like to donate immediately, you can eft to the following bank account:
STD Bank 071790993
