Join Us as We Cycle for Children in need at the Canal Walk Cyclethon

Canal Walk Cyclethon

This weekend, both @KeeganKruger and I will be heading to Canal Walk shopping centre for the Canal Walk Cyclethon, to raise funds for the Smile Foundation.

We appeal to all our readers to join us for this awesome event – let’s Saddle-Up For a Smile

The hugely popular annual charity Cyclethon, in aid of the Smile Foundation, is coming to Canal Walk Shopping Centre (CWSC) for the first time.  On Saturday 3rd March 2018, Centre Court will be turned into a high-energy, fun-filled cycle studio as hundreds of participants get set to spin their way to fund-raising fitness.

The spinning sessions are 50-minutes each and start from 10H00, with the last at 13H00. Mums, dads, kids (provided they can reach the pedals), exercise bunnies, those looking for a warm-up before the big cycle tour or even if you are considering cycling as a form of fitness for the very first time are welcome.   Corporates can get involved by challenging their staff, colleagues or competitors to participate – Planet Fitness, The Diamond Works and White Case are just three of the companies who have already signed up to sponsor sessions.

To add some extra panache to the morning, Top Billing presenter, Jade Hübner, and theatre personality, Harry Sideropoulos, will be on hand to add encouragement to cyclists, supporters and those curious to know what all the buzz is about.

Vanessa Herbst, Marketing Manager at Canal Walk Shopping Centre: “Canal Walk is a strong supporter of community and especially giving a helping hand to those who need it most.  Giving the gift of a smile to a child is priceless and we are delighted to be the annual sponsor for this event and we strongly urge our shoppers to get involved.” (Tickets are R160 per person per session and available at www.ticketpros.co.za).

100 bikes have been kindly donated by five local Planet Fitness gyms, and will be transported to Canal Walk, for free, by Stuttaford Van Lines for the big day. Planet Fitness has been a supporter of this national event since 1996 and remains a committed partner, as does the Hyprop Foundation, CWSC’s holding company, who has committed R300 000 to the initiative and calls on like-minded organisations to follow suit.

Hedley Lewis, Smile Foundation CEO, says the Cyclethon will go a long way to assisting Tygerberg Hospital, explaining: “All the funds raised from this event, will be allocated towards the hospital’s weekly theatre slate, where every Thursday, additional children undergo surgery to alleviate the backlog within the Cape Town area. This helps ensure these children get the help they need sooner, rather than living with their difficult – and often very painful – conditions for that much longer.”

To help play its part in the ongoing water crisis in Cape Town, and contribute to a zero water-footprint, Smile Foundation has secured Pureau as a water sponsor.  1000 bottles will be supplied by their Johannesburg office and any unopened bottles will remain and given to a selected cause.
