Player Ratings: Argentina vs Springboks in Mendoza
After picking up 5 points last week, many expected the Springboks to do the same but that did not happen, as it actually went the complete opposite way!
The Boks got absolutely battered in Mendoza, and to be accurate, they were given a real rugby lesson when it came to commitment on the field, physicality in defence and doing the basics right.
The loss to Argentina was the country’s largest in the history of the sport and it left many questioning the selection and game plan that coach Rassie Erasmus is trying to implement.
Last week, @JudgeRugby had the following to say, “We were not great at set pieces, particularly the lineout, our loosies played well but we did seem to miss a little something at the breakdown and Pollard’s kicking was atrocious” and one can say this was exactly the case this weekend again….
If there was one positive to come out the game it was probably the fact that we created try-scoring opportunities, but the manner in which so many were butchered, one has to ask if we are actually working on these final bits of detail.
The game is now done, it should mean that the emotional talk is out of the system so let’s see how the panel scored the players this week:
Tendai Matawarira – 5/10
@hoerboer – Quiet day in the office to his standards.
@JudgeRugby – not his best showing but then again no one had a showing it seemed
Malcolm Marx – 4/10
@hoerboer – A hooker that can’t do the basics a hooker needs to do.
@JudgeRugby – basics, basics, basics – 2nd week running
Frans Malherbe – 4/10
@hoerboer – Desperately needs to regain his match fitness.
@JudgeRugby – nothing great to talk about
Eben Etzebeth – 4/10
@hoerboer – Tank was empty after last week’s performance. Proper brain fart for his yellow.
@JudgeRugby – long injury and last week’s heroics caught up
Franco Mostert – 4/10
@hoerboer – Sjoe… below par performance.
@JudgeRugby – didn’t solve the line out issue even though it improved
Francois Louw – 5/10
@hoerboer – Was he in any rucks on Saturday?
@JudgeRugby – we have our balance wrong I feel in 6, 7 & 8 so no one did great but I feel the job was not done
Siya Kolisi – 5/10
@hoerboer – FUCK ALL CAPTAINCY! Was quiet when he was supposed to talk and rally the troops.
@JudgeRugby – Attacking number good and advanced plenty with regards to rest of the game, so so
Warren Whiteley – 5/10
@hoerboer – Tried but not effective.
@JudgeRugby – Plenty carries which in all honesty is not the best option for his strengths.
Faf de Klerk – 4/10
@hoerboer – It’s a scrumhalf that cant give proper service to his 10. Kak pass as well.
@JudgeRugby – If your pack struggles and defence rushes (can be read as ‘is offside’) you need a 9 and/or 10 that can manage the game.
Handre Pollard – 4/10
@hoerboer – Couldn’t get the backline firing because of the shitty service he got from Faf. No backup kicker is worrying.
@JudgeRugby – 2nd week in a row he struggled off the tee and in general play
Aphiwe Dyantyi – 5/10
@hoerboer – Was not his day on defence.
@JudgeRugby – did great with what he had but limped on with the team
Andre Esterhuizen – 6/10
@hoerboer – The best player for the Boks on the day. Don’t know why he got subbed?
@JudgeRugby – decent on attack so so on Defence struggled mostly because of rushing D and what happened inside
Lukhanyo Am – 5/10
@hoerboer – Probably his worst test in the Green and Gold
@JudgeRugby – rush D really hampered him, which in all honesty should be rectified with decisions on the inside channels.
Lionel Mapoe – 5/10
@hoerboer – Got caught out of position a couple of times because he was playing out of position. Damian should’ve come on when Mapimpi left the field. He also could’ve taking over kicking duties from Pollard.
@JudgeRugby – had terrible tackle numbers but plenty of issues out wide with the way we defended and Pumas attacked. I thought he was solid on the day
Willie le Roux – 5/10
@hoerboer – Nee Willie.
@JudgeRugby – not what we want from him, he was done no favours with what happened inside and isolated him outside. Poor execution on some attacking decisions.
That’s it for this week’s player ratings for the Springboks vs Argentina – one to forget, in all honesty.
