Springbok Player Ratings: The Argentinian Job

Castle Lager Rugby Championship 2017

We do apologise for the late post, but as some would say its better late than never!

The performance might not have been perfect, but there were signs of change in the team’s 37-15 win over Argentina this weekend.

For a change, it was nice to get our Rugby Championship campaign off to a good start and here is how the TOTW Panel rated each Springbok this week:

  1. Beast Mtawarira

@Justus_Beets: 6/10 – Pretty good beasts and where to find them. The front row.

@JudgeRugby:   7/10 – great scrummaging and all round solid performance.

@Hoerboer:        8/10 – The whole front row was superb. Beast was solid as usual.

@OdinKuun:       7/10 – Solid all-around performance from the big man.

  1. Malcolm Marx

@Justus_Beets: 7/10 – The extra loose forward.

@JudgeRugby:   6/10 – struggled with his line outs but good outing.

@Hoerboer:        8/10 – The whole front row was superb. Beast was solid as usual.

 @OdinKuun:      7/10 – A strong game with only one line out miss.

  1. Coenie Oosthuizen

@Justus_Beets: 6/10 – The other extra loose forward.

@JudgeRugby:   7/10 – very handy. No missed tackles, lost scrums and a few good carries.

@Hoerboer:        8/10 – I was impressed with his scrumming

 @OdinKuun:      9/10 – Probably his best outing in a Bok jersey, flawless.

  1. Eben Etzebeth

@Justus_Beets: 7/10 – Very adult performance.

@JudgeRugby:   7/10 – great effort by the captain, did his job well, lead the team well.

@Hoerboer:        6/10 – Starting to like the idea of him being captain

@OdinKuun:       6.5/10 – He seems to calm down when he has the captaincy but that’s a good thing, calm in decision-making. good signs.

  1. Franco Mostert

@Justus_Beets: 6/10 – Has a shorter name than Pieter Stephen du To it.

@JudgeRugby:   7/10 – good outing.

@Hoerboer:        7/10 – Mr Consistant himself

@OdinKuun:      6/10 – Good work rate on and off the ball but gave a few unnecessary penalties away.

  1. Siya Kolisi

@Justus_Beets: 8/10 – Starting to cement his place by stringing some good games together

@JudgeRugby:   6.5/10 – had plenty of work missed 4 of his 16 tackles but was all over the show.

@Hoerboer:        7.2/10 – Consistent AF

@OdinKuun:      7.5/10 – Didn’t do much wrong did he? He is really finding his feet in the Bok jersey now.

  1. Jaco Kriel

@Justus_Beets: 8/10 – Stayed off the wing.

@JudgeRugby:   6.5/10 – missed a few tackles too but had a decent game.

@Hoerboer:        7/10 – tackling machine!

@OdinKuun:       7/10 – a few steals, strong with the ball and in defence it’s what we come to expect from him

  1. Uzaier Cassiem

@Justus_Beets: 7/10 – Still finding his feet but very dangerous on attack.

@JudgeRugby:   7/10 – 10 carries in a solid performance – he did well in his 1st start and covering at 8.

@Hoerboer:        7/10 – not bad for a 1st start at 8

@OdinKuun:       7/10 – I was really impressed with him all over the park, strong game.

  1. Ross Cronje

@Justus_Beets: 6/10 – Why have a 90s 9 when you can have a 2010s 9?

@JudgeRugby:   5.5/10 wasn’t himself it seemed but I suspect he was carrying an injury ahead of kick off.

@Hoerboer:        6/10 – Nothing special

@OdinKuun:       6/10 – A few passes were not on target but luckily the pack was going forward.

  1. Elton Jantjies

@Justus_Beets: 7/10 – Very steady for an Elton Jantjies

@JudgeRugby:   7/10 made to work hard on D but didn’t miss a kick at goal and show some of that EJ flair attacking the line.

@Hoerboer:        8/10 – solid performance for the 10.

@OdinKuun:       7/10 – A solid game nothing fancy got his head up for a few nice open field kicks made his kicks but there wasn’t really any pressure on him.

  1. Courtnall Skosan

@Justus_Beets: 7/10 – Finally got some good ball

@JudgeRugby:   6/10 very busy but a number of handling errors. I am so happy he got a try too and it was a cracker.

@Hoerboer:        6/10 – threat on attack but defense an issue.

  1. Jan Serfontein

@Justus_Beets: 7/10 – Don’t see anyone dethroning him as our 12 anytime soon

@JudgeRugby:  7/10 he and EJ defended well for all the traffic in their channels. Seems to be finding his form again.

@Hoerboer:        6/10 – hys naai taai. But not his best test this weekend.

@OdinKuun:      6.5/10 – One costly mistake that led to the Pumas 80m try but other than that made his tackles and was involved in 2 of the Boks tries.

  1. Jessie Kriel

@Justus_Beets: 6/10 – Better than Anneline Kriel on 13

@JudgeRugby:   6/10 – plenty work on attack and he did well, couple handling errors and 2 missed tackles out of 9 attempts.

@Hoerboer:        5/10 – Can the Boks please pick a proper 13?

@OdinKuun:       6/10 – A solid if not penetrating performance from him but I expected a bit more.

  1. Raymond Rhule

@Justus_Beets: 7/10 – Much better than the 2015 Raymond Rhule

@JudgeRugby:   6/10 this kid has no issues on attack. Very exciting to watch. Needs to work on his defence.

@Hoerboer:        5/10 – to be honest still don’t know what he is doing here

@OdinKuun:       5/10 – Yes he scored a try and was lively going forward but he is at least 5 meters slower on defence compared to attack, will be exploited by better teams.

  1. Andries Coetzee

@Justus_Beets: 7/10 – I can’t hate a fullback that thinks attack first and kicking last

@JudgeRugby:  6/10 – 50% tackle completion but a few good runs and clears well from the back

@Hoerboer:        7/10 – a menace on attack

@OdinKuun:       6/10 – Solid when called upon and ran more than he kicked but didn’t get much penetration.
