Rugby: Springbok Player Ratings – France
Another week done and dusted and it seems we are just going through the motions as supporters to get to December when we can finally all put this behind us, wash 2017 off and hopefully look ahead to 2018.
There is no doubting that Saturday’s match, regardless of the victory or not, was all going to be about Handre Pollard at 10. The way I look at it is: do you prefer BMW or Merc?
We need to be very honest with ourselves when talking a player up or down because at the end of the day, we are either a fan of him, or we’re not. Pollard has been hailed the genius in Saturday’s win yet so much of his game was below average. The only good thing was he took it to the line aggressively, ironically this is not Jantjies’ style or strength so he wouldn’t do it on a normal day. If we are going to applaud anyone for Saturday it needs to be de Jager, Venter and the front row.
If anything was highlighted on Saturday it was the fact that our player management is down the toilet. This from bringing back from injury, to managing the bench to rest & rotation.
Just a few pointers; Ross Cronje is a good 9 but he needs a break. The guy has come off 2 gruelling Super Rugby seasons and full time international duty. There is no harm in benching or resting and then giving the other players in the squad a go.
Francois Venter is the spark we needed in the backs, not only because he is a good player but we had a playmaker in at 12. If it were Jantjies and Pollard at 10 & 12 you would see the same I recon. Venter released the backs, sorted out the communication and provided options.
The only way I can try and explain Saturday’s game against a poor French side is ‘meh’
Nonetheless, here’s what our panel of armchair pundits thought of each Springbok’s performance.
