Springbok Player Ratings: New Zealand at Newlands
We didn’t win, but it was the effort and performance from the Springboks that everybody has been crying out for over the past few weeks!
The 1 point loss to the All Blacks was something that not many people expected, especially with the game played at Newlands (The home of both WP Rugby and the so-called “Cape Crusaders”).
The intensity and just the general pace of the game was something unbelievable, and it was the slug-fest that many of us hoped to see after two disappointing draws to Australia and a 57-0 hammering by the best team in world rugby.
Many Springboks showed last weekend that they can play at a certain level, if they put their minds to it and today we take a look at how two members of The Pundits’ Rugby Panel scored each player’s performance.
Here are our Rugby Panel’s ratings and thoughts on each Springbok player vs New Zealand
- Steven Kitshoff
@Justus_Beets: 8/10 – You just want to scrape his head against a matchbox. Very good and a menace at breakdowns.
@OdinKuun: 7/10 – Rooies didn’t disappoint on his first Bok start. His best test to date.
- Malcolm Marx
@Justus_Beets: 10/10 – The greatest game by a hooker I’ve ever watched. Dane Coles now has a hero. Was robbed of the Man of the match award. Was like he aged 5 years in experience in one week.
@OdinKuun: 9/10 – As close to a perfect performance as you are likely to see this season! How the FUCK did he not get MOTW?
- Ruan Dreyer
@Justus_Beets: 4/10 – Struggled, but at least didn’t end up on his belly.
@OdinKuun: 5/10 – I’m not yet convinced, good player but maybe the step-up is too big.
- Eben Etzebeth
@Justus_Beets: 8/10 – Loads of carries and tackles, would like to see him offload a bit more to mix it up. Sam Cane now knows what goes bump in the night.
@OdinKuun: 8/10 – He was colossal! On a side note, I like his post-match interviews, short and not sweet.
- Lood de Jager
@Justus_Beets: 7/10 – Was surprisingly good, some of that lost World Cup form shining through again.
@OdinKuun: 6/10 – Honest shift but looked off the pace at times, Mostert should have started.
- Siya Kolisi
@Justus_Beets: 5/10 – I expected more of him seeing that he was playing at home. Needs to find that extra gear again for games like these.
@OdinKuun: 6/10 – Disappointing compared to his form this season
@Justus_Beets: 7/10 – Decent game in a position he shouldn’t be in. Feels like he’s too tall to be a flanker.
@OdinKuun: 7/10 – WOW! Peter where did this performance come from? Really strong game!
- Francois Louw
@Justus_Beets: 5/10 – Wait, he played?! Didn’t see too much of this highly paid experienced mercenary. Rapper Flo-rida would have done better.
@OdinKuun: 6/10 – He is not an eighthman but a competent performance.
- Ross Cronje
@Justus_Beets: 6/10 – a bit better, but still not in the form he was in Super Rugby.
@OdinKuun: 5.5/10 – I need to be honest here I’m not a fan, it’s worrying that he is the best we have.
- Elton Jantjies
@Justus_Beets: 3/10 – Just tired of seeing him duck up in general play and looking confused. At least Pollard’s body language looks calm and focused. Please, no more.
@OdinKuun: 5/10 – sigh… will he ever get BMT? I doubt it.
- Courtnall Skosan
@Justus_Beets: 3/10 – Looked a bit like he wasn’t told what the plan was.
@OdinKuun: 6/10 – More defence than attack (not his fault) but a solid game.
- Jan Serfontein
@Justus_Beets: 8/10 – He was fighting the good fight and should have finished the game. Anyone who keeps Damian De Allende out of the side is modern day saint.
@OdinKuun: 7/10 – Yet another good performance from Jan fully committed and hard as nails.
- Jessie Kriel
@Justus_Beets: 2/10 – He gets two ’cause he wore the jersey the right way around. Get Venter or Mapoe in the team. Tired of this fokken kak! #SaveThe13
@OdinKuun: 6.5/10 – One of his better games made a few important tackles, but we need a bit more on attack.
- Dillon Leyds
@Justus_Beets: 6/10 – Fifteen might be a better fit for him, but wasn’t too bad considering the opposition and his experience.
@OdinKuun: 5.5/10 – Was anonymous at times but at least he’s better than Rhule.
- Andries Coetzee
@Justus_Beets: 5/10 – Should let Leyds try on his shirt. He’s struggling a bit to read the game and change the kick selection on his foot.
@OdinKuun: 6/10 – A few nice breaks and committed when asked to defend but there is something missing that I can’t quite put my finger on.
