South African Players Abroad XV: All Round Quality

South African Players Abroad

With only two South African sides involved in Super Rugby this weekend, it was the perfect opportunity to give our Saffas Abroad a closer look and they didn’t disappoint with a number of players performing for their respective clubs, making our picks even more difficult.

The lack of looseheads abroad sees Nick Schonert make the shift to the opposite side of the scrum with Marcel van der Merwe donning the no.3 jersey. Schalk Britz robs Nick Fenton-Wells for a spot with the former winding back the clock with another superb performance for Saracens.

Flip van der Merwe and Juandre Kruger make up an all-Springbok second row. Not much separates my loose trio and their contenders with Schalk Burger, Johan Meyer and Duane Vermeulen edging out Ruan Ackermann, who had a brilliant 20-minute cameo for Gloucester, and Gerrit-Jan van Velze.

Cobus Reinach’s brilliance for Northampton Saints sees him brush James Hall aside for my no.9 jersey, while Jaco van der Walt bossed Edinburgh to an impressive win over Scarlets. Juan de Jongh and Robert Ebersohn form a dangerous midfield partnership while Duhan van der Merwe continues to occupy my no.11 jersey.

Cheslin Kolbe returned in fantastic form for Toulouse and grabs the no.14 jersey, while Willie Le Roux picked up two try assists to claim the no.15 jersey. Scott van Breda and Luke Daniels were exceptional for their Championship sides and deserve an honourable mention.
