Springbok Player Ratings: Heartbreak Down Under

Springboks vs Australia 2018 Rugby Championship

A closely contested Test Match that went down to the wire, the last 5 games against the Wallabies have been separated by 8 points or less (add to that 2 ‘kissing your sister‘ draws). It was not a great game, no, but for the neutral it was an exciting game that could have gone either way.

We are not neutrals here and we want wins!

We are not getting them and truth be told, we really are deep down in the dwang with regards to our rugby. The one thing that is a little unsavory is the different factions and groups created by this, that keep with the fights and arguments and the ‘I told you so’s‘. It is rather disappointing and feels more like anti-support (seen on every soccer fan’s Facebook and other social pages when their most hated, and watched, rival team loses or something silly)

We are not losing games because of one man, we are not losing games because of our flyhalf, our hooker, our captain or our coach. We are losing games because we are creating a platform, a foundation to build on. We can not do this without blooding players, testing things and working towards the common goal of making the Boks great again.

There is no quick fix to our game, no coach, no Willemse, no Faf, no Eben can single handily do it.

We need 40-50 guys, working together for a few years to get there. Personally, I feel this is our best chance to do it and follow through and I feel that Rassie is the right man, we will only know this in 4 years, I really hope we stick through it.

Anyhooo, enough of that, lets jump into what you actually came here for – our Springbok Player Ratings:

1.       Steven Kitshoff – 6/10

@HoerBoer: Solid day in the office.

@JudgeRugby: Pretty decent day out

2.       Mbongeni Mbonami – 6/10

@HoerBoer: Lineouts worked till he left. He did a lot of donkey work while on the field.

@JudgeRugby: I feel he was decent, wanted to see some more

3.       Frans Malherbe – 6/10

@HoerBoer: Best so far this year. Solid tackles and good scrum performance.

@JudgeRugby: Probably his best showing in a Bok jumper in ages, taken a while to get going though

4.       Eben Etzebeth – 5/10

@HoerBoer: Didn’t do much wrong on his 50 minutes on the field.

@JudgeRugby: If we are measuring him on his comeback game, which we are, he was rather quiet

5.       Franco Mostert – 5.5/10.

@HoerBoer: Did a lot of donkey work on the field. Why isn’t he at 7?

@JudgeRugby: Good tackle count, no surprises there though. Really works hard.

6.       Siya Kolisi – 6/10

@HoerBoer: Still not a captain? Does he talk enough?

@JudgeRugby:  He adds value on the field, as a player and a leader.

7.       Pieter-Steph du Toit – 5.5/10

@HoerBoer: Still think PSDT and Franco need to swop around.

@JudgeRugby: What he said…

8.       Warren Whiteley – 5/10

@HoerBoer: Is he still Springbok material?

@JudgeRugby: I think he deserves his spot, mys question is are we using him to his strengths or square peg round hole stuff making him play as Thor?

9.       Faf de Klerk – KAK /10

@HoerBoer: Is there really no one better?!

@JudgeRugby: He needs a specific type of ball, noticeably go forward. His passes seldom hit the actual target and he is very erratic. Cam Wright start, Faf to finish the game is my call, but hey…

10.   Elton Jantjies – 6/10

@HoerBoer: Felt he controlled the game better then Pollard. Want to see Andre play 12 next to him.

@JudgeRugby: Not a bad day but will get slated regardless. Faf does him no favors, none at all

11.   Aphiwe Dyantyi – 5.5/10

@HoerBoer: Not his best test. Also didn’t see a lot of the ball.

@JudgeRugby: Very little ball for him and had a lot of cleaning up to do. How we do not try and make more space for him is beyond me

 12.   Damian de Allende – 5.5/10

@HoerBoer: Nothing to write home about.

@JudgeRugby: Not bad, clearly doing what he is told to do. I just wish wish wish we would use him more as a distributor. He has a bullet pass both sides, it’s true

13.   Jesse Kriel – 5/10

@HoerBoer: Better then Am or Mapoe. Easy answer. Nope, he isn’t.

@JudgeRugby: Not great, not my first choice or 2nd at 13.

14.   Makazole Mapimpi – 6.5/10

@HoerBoer: Pitty he couldn’t play the whole game.

@JudgeRugby: A bit concerned he didn’t finish both of his last 2 games now on his way home…Player Management. Reason why we took a chance…? Because we have not 1 Right wing in the squa

15.   Willie le Roux – 4/10

@HoerBoer: A ‘meh’ performance by Willie.

@JudgeRugby: Yeah, not great. But hey, like I have mentioned I think you need a specific set up at 10 & 12 to make him deadly. (If you are unsure, look at how Wasps set up last season)

16.   Malcoml Marx – 5/10

@HoerBoer: Bongi was more effective. Lineouts struggled when he entered

@JudgeRugby: Yeah, um so where is this ‘Worlds Best Hooker’ we keep talking about. I like him and rate him but he isn’t in form now. 4 Tackles in 46 minutes, any steals, don’t think so to be honest

23.   Cheslin Kolbe – 5/10

@HoerBoer:   First Test Jitters. Did see glimpses of those fancy feet

@JudgeRugby: You, my man, ARE A SPRINGBOK!!! Trying conditions and everything around him was crumbling, not ideal.
