Springbok Player Ratings: THAT Win Over New Zealand

Springbok Player Ratings New Zealand

We did it and I have figured out the recipe for this: it is for me not to watch. I was away and only got to watch the game afterwards but it was every bit as exciting as I had hoped. Now, I don’t want to be ‘Johnny Rain Cloud’ over here but

WHAT THE HELL??!!??

Why do we only ever show up for one team. It really does my head in. If you look back to our narrow loss against the Kiwi’s in Cape Town, I said the same. Many said the same. It stinks of exactly who we are, we have become arrogant and feel we will pitch up and get wins against every one else, but know we must play to do it against New Zealand. Play like that in every game and we will be the best, no question about it.

Righty, what a game. The energy in the SA rugby public and the rugby world is just oozing out and rightfully so. Put NZ under pressure, build a lead and you can actually beat them. If anything the Kiwi’s know how to adapt and fix things quicker than anyone so don’t expect the same errors to come from them in the next few games. I will say, you need luck in sport and the Boks got a fair bit of it this weekend too and what a relief it is get it. Damn I am still on a buzz and it isn’t my morning ‘Moer Koffie’

Bow Down Before Us, Minions (Old photo, but the sentiment remains)

Sensational result and sensational from all involved. The perception is changing, the tide is changing and I can assure you, there will be bad to come with all the good and I am ok with that.

1. Steven Kitshoff – 7/10

@Justus_Beets His hair didn’t even make him stand out, but a decent enough outing on an impossible mission.

@Hoerboer Couldn’t have asked for a better performance for Steven.

@JudgeRugby Much contention around him starting vs Beast. Both add value both deserve starts and rest. Kitshoff was a machine against the Kiwi’s

2. Malcolm Marx – 7/10

@Justus_Beets The NZ specialist.

@Hoerboer Did the work you expect from a hooker better this week.

@JudgeRugby Line out issues are still a huge worry for me BUT he stood out in open play

3. Frans Malherbe – 7/10

@Justus_Beets Had no business playing as well as he did. Didn’t miss one tackle.

@Hoerboer How was that clean line break?

@JudgeRugby Best game in a Bok jersey, took his time getting there though. Great game

4. Eben Etzebeth – 7/10

@Justus_Beets A more sedate game, meaning he didn’t rip anyone’s jersey off. Almost popped PSDTs eyes back into his head during celebrations.

@Hoerboer Got a stupid penalty but all in all not a bad performance seeing this is his 4th game this year.

@JudgeRugby Good effort and wasn’t man alone in his work rate

5. Franco Mostert – 7.5/10

@Justus_Beets As always, consistent. And there he was up front shoveling coal, into the engine that dragged New Zealand passengers into hell.

@Hoerboer Got through a lot of donkie-werk. Still want to know why isn’t he at 7?

@JudgeRugby His usual great game, everyone else just pitched up too this time

6. Siya Kolisi – 8.5/10

@Justus_Beets A game he can cherish and use as fuel in the future locker room talks. Great result for him as captain.

@Hoerboer He talked like a captain this weekend.

@JudgeRugby I am going to name my boy Siyamthanda Kolisi

7. Pieter Steph du Toit – 9/10

@Justus_Beets He tackled, carried and tackled till he couldn’t carry or tackle anymore, then he got up and tackled and carried some more. No one died on that day, but no one lived more than this young man.

@Hoerboer Really put his body on the line.

@JudgeRugby Huge Huge Shift. H.U.G.E.

8. Warren Whiteley – 9/10

@Justus_Beets Helped rally the troops late in the game. Made 17 tackles, missed none. The one on one, when he took down a full speed Perenara, was an image that deserves to be on a bank note!

@Hoerboer He was linking extremely well.

@JudgeRugby Watching him marshal things around the ruck and watching how he plays is incredible. He is not a Duane style 8, don’t make him fulfill that role.

9. Faf De Klerk – 6/10

@Justus_Beets Not great, but like Breyton Paulse said earlier in the week, you need a little arrogance when you go up against NZ and he’s little and arrogant. Yes, Judge. I’ll still pick him.

@Hoerboer Is there really no one better?!

@JudgeRugby I struggle with his all round play. He is great going forward and does put pressure on teams, put pressure on him and our game struggles. Pass accuracy needs attention

10. Handre Pollard – 8.5/10

@Justus_Beets Still shocked at how few people are talking about his performance. Only went up against the “Best rugby player in the world” and bossed it. Even did work at 12.

@Hoerboer Controlled the game well. Defense needs work.

@JudgeRugby I really thought he stepped up. Nothing flashy, just did what he needed and did it well. He and EJ continue to grow after this performance then most of our troubles are sorted

11. Aphiwe Dyantyi – 9/10

@Justus_Beets Deep in our half, Pollard doesn’t go for the boring touch finder, he goes for a cross kick to Weapon X, it sails over his head, but you and NZ immediately realise, something has changed. Brilliant game from this young gun

@Hoerboer Solid game from the wing, got rewarded with 2 tries.

@JudgeRugby No hiding the fact I am a massive fan and he is hungry hungry hungry. First time in ages I have seen a top talent move through SR into the Boks and continue to look hungry!

12. Damian De Allende – 6.5/10

@Justus_Beets I kind of forgot he was playing till I saw him getting medical help.

@Hoerboer Imagine the shock the other team will have the day he passes a ball?

@JudgeRugby Quiet showing on the day which is unusual as he is often much more involved

13. Lukhanyo Am – 6.5/10

@Justus_Beets Unfortunately got an injury, so its tough to make a decent call.

@Hoerboer Pity he left the field so early.

@JudgeRugby Quiet day out too

14. Jessie Kriel – 5.5/10

@Justus_Beets Not where I’d like to see him play.

@Hoerboer Defense needs some work still.

@JudgeRugby I am unsure, I don’t want him at 13 and I don’t think I want him on the wing.

15.  Willie le Roux – 7/10

@Justus_Beets He wasn’t amazing, but he was there when NZ butchered a quick throw in and that helped put a decent sized crack in NZ.

@Hoerboer Good try snatching the ball out of All Blacks’ hands.

@JudgeRugby Hot and Cold, I really struggle with that pass to Dyantyi that was so far off the target when he was under no pressure and set up the defender.

22. Elton Jantjies 7.5/10

Great lob pass. Lovely to see him play with a load off his shoulders. Is the Jantjies/Pollard 10/12 option a reality?

23. Cheslin Kolbe 7.5/10

Great to see him bag a try and he has wheeeeeels! YOH! Did he do enough to warrant a start?
