Super Rugby Team of the Week 6
Another week, another 25% success return for South African rugby. No Cheetahs or Kings feel good story or failure to take attention away from the big four. There’s only the stiff shot of truth that gives you that “Dear God what was in that?!” face-pull.
Crusaders v Bulls
Ask an Australian or South African Super Rugby team what their nightmare fixture would be and I think they’ll all reply with: playing the Crusaders in New Zealand.
That was the nightmare that awaited the Bulls and to add more horror to it, the conditions were wet. The Crusaders were in their element. The Bulls were not. The only sweetness the Bulls tasted, was crossing the Crusaders line twice, it was a small reward on a difficult day.
The only positive to take from it, is that this was the hardest fixture out of the way and things should get a bit easier going forward. A tour to forget.
Rebels v Sharks
Science promises answers on almost every question, but I dare them to find an explanation on why the Sharks have struggled this much with that big pool of talent.
Maybe its the coach?
I thought Robert du Preez snr would be a great coach, but to quote my Twitter self, he now just looks like an angry dad.
Apart from the Waratahs result, Dave Wessels’ men have been the in-form Australian side so far. The Sharks add all the elements but as soon as they stir the pot, the ingredients turn to shit.
The Rebels handed the Sharks a 32 point face-pushed-into-the-toilet-beating. A team with quite a few Springboks and a couple of Springbok hopefuls should not be getting these results put against them.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Sharks all got backpacks and took a year off to go find themselves in Europe. Time to shape up, boys!
Stormers v Reds
The suddenly in-form Stormers were close to perfect last time around vs the Blues, there must be something in those 90 second showers. Will we see it trademarked and sold like some overpriced muscle growth powder that eventually leads you to a heart attack? “90-second shower in a can. Just add water” for the on-the-go rugby player of the future.
The Reds are a bit of an unknown entity this year but have been making it real clear that they won’t allow any team to just run over them and they came from behind like a dodgy cellmate when they were 0-14 behind early on against the Bulls.
The Stormers were looking cool and calm and were getting the points and looked set for a full complement of log points, but the Reds never stopped playing and suddenly the Stormers came apart and by the time the clock was empty, the Stormers were trying to hang on to a victory.
They got the victory in the end but there is definitely a bit of smelling salts in this result in regards to how they struggled to finish off the Reds.
Jaguares v Lions
What rubbish rugby. Lost sleep to watch fifteen people sleeping. If Malcolm Marx ever gets injured by some kryptonite bullet or tank dropped on him, this team will be completely lost.
I don’t want to think about this game again. Defensive lines with sinkholes in them. Just go home, Lions! Lots of “Swys werk” this week to keep the ship from sinking.
And after such a disappointing week, let’s see who made our panel’s Team of the Week.
