The Pundits Rugby Panel – Team of the Year


SA Rugby recently announced the contenders for the different awards that it will hand out early next year. A big talking point has been the glaring omission of a number of players from the Super Rugby and Currie Cup nominations.

We decided to have a look back at the 2017 Super Rugby season and show who were the stand out performers as voted for by The Pundits’s Rugby Panel on a weekly basis with our Super Rugby Team of the Week posts.

Below we have listed the starting line up according to Super Rugby form with the back up players – Pretty solid side, don’t you think?

  • Tendai Mtawarira (28%)
  • JC janse van Rensburg (23%)

The Beast made 50 carries this season and completed 53 tackles

  • Malcolm Marx (39%)
  • Bongi Mbonambi (18%)

Marx was joint 5th highest try scorer this season and tied 9th for turnovers won

  • Wilco Louw (22%)
  • Ross Geldenhuis (20%)

Louw boasts a tackle completion percentage of 93%

  • Eben Etzebeth (32%)
  • Andries Ferreira (27%)

Etzebeth won 10 turnovers this season and carried 116 times making 191m

  • Franco Mostert (33%)
  • Ruan Botha (22%)

Mostert completed 148 of his 168 tackles this season making a tackle ever 8.6 minutes while he is on the field

  • Jaco Kriel (32%)
  • Chris Cloete (30%)

Kriel was joint 13th highest try scorer this season as well as 5th on the most turnovers won this season while Chris Cloete was top for turnovers with 34 this season

  • Andisa Ntsila (26%)
  • Siya Kolisi /Jean-Luc du Preez (15%)

Ntsila (6th) & du Preez (5th) were impressive in the tackles made department this season

  • Sikhumbuzo Notshe (36%)
  • Warren Whiteley (29%)

Notshe bagged 7 tries this season making 89 carries for 397m with ball in hand in the process

  • Cobus Reinach/ Louis Schreuder (26%)

Schreuder was joint 7th this season with try assists.

  • Lionel Cronje (36%)
  • Curwin Bosch (23%)

Cronje ranked 5th as the over all points scorer and joint 7th for try assists for the tournament with Bosch an impressive 2nd on the points log

  • Makazole Mapimpi (20%)
  • Lwazi Mvovo (17%)

Mapimpi was joint 3rd top try scorer with 11 tries this season

  • Rohan janse van Rensburg (20%)
  • Andries Esterhuizen/ Harold Vorster(13%)

Vorster was tied 11th for carries this season

  • Lukhanyo Am (35%)
  • EW Viljoen (33%)

Am made 13 clean breaks this season and 5 try assists while Viljoen completed 85 passes this season with 4 try assists

  • Raymond Rhule (28%)
  • Cheslin Kolbe/ Kobus van Wyk (17%)

Kolbe was joint 8th highest try scorer this season and impressed by being joint 3rd for defenders beaten.

  • SP Marais (39%)
  • Andries Coetzee/ Masixole Banda (15%)

Coetzee was 2nd on the list for most meters gained with ball in hand, a massive 78m per game totaling 1404m for the season, SP Marais was in 12th place
