Having lost two games on the trot after a positive start to the season, The Pundits FC were desperate for victory when they faced Sheffield Monday at Fives Futbol on, well, Monday.
It was a cagey affair with both teams getting their fair share of chances to open the scoring. The breakthrough eventually came when JT slotted a penalty in emphatic fashion, but it was their next two goals that really grabbed the attention of international media.
Never one to shy away from kicking a ball as hard as he can, JT once again made it count from a set-piece. With the ball just inside the attacking half of the field, JT scored what, at the time, was most certainly the goal of the season. A free-kick so powerful, it’s aftermath almost sent off the alarms at the International Space Station.
The goalkeeper was left stranded as the ball hit the woodwork, top-left corner, and edged over the line, into the box. The opposition insisted on goal-line technology to determine whether the ball had even crossed the line – and then they realized that this is Fives and not the World Cup Final.
Clearly agitated by the heroics of JT, Brent Swart made it his mission to overshadow the world-class free kick.
From a similar range, Swart received the ball and with a flick of the foot, lifted it into the air – what happened next was a volley so spectacular that, in an effort to try and score a better volley, Paul Scholes is considering coming out of retirement.
It dipped, it swerved and it hit the top corner with so much force, it DID set off the alarms at the International Space Station. Unconfirmed reports state that the sound barrier had been broken and that the Sheffield Monday ‘keeper is still wondering where the ball is.
All in all, it was a good evening on the park for The Pundits FC – the opposition were by no means a walk-over and the 3-2 win now puts them 5th on the Monday Night League log.
