We Meet: Nic Groom

Our previous We Meet: Bradley Grobler went down well with the Ajax Cape Town faithful and it is with great joy that we announce another addition to our “We Meet” initiative. And what’s even better? This time we get to meet a Currie Cup Champion! This weekend we will be chatting with WP Rugby’s Nic Groom over lunch and beers at moyo Blouberg. Provincial Rugby is done for 2013 and we want to find out what the player gets up to now that he has more time on his hands. If you have any specific questions for Nic, leave them in the comments below and we will pass it on to him.

Who is: Nic Groom

Born: 21 February 1990, King William’s Town, South Africa

Position: Scrumhalf

Physical: 1.73m, 83kg

Provincial Caps: 17

Points: 15

Debut: 2011 vs Golden Lions

Stormers Caps: 1

Stormers Debut: 2011 vs Cheetahs

Nic attended Rondebosch Boys High School and went on to play for UCT Ikey Tigers, winning the Varisty Cup trophy in 2011. With Dewaldt Duvenage suffering from injury in the 2011 Currie Cup, Nic was able to make his mark as the first choice scrumhalf after making the move up from DHL Western Province u21 side.

Questions that Nic answered for WP Rugby

What is your earliest rugby memory?
Playing barefoot on the Dale Junior fields. The hardest fields you could ever play on!

What is the best part of playing for DHL Western Province?
I live in Cape Town so it’s so awesome to represent such a great city. We have the greatest supporters on earth too.

If you were offered a superpower, what would you choose and why?
I would want to be like Hiro Nakamura – from Heroes. He freezes time and can teleport. I would then be the top try-scorer in every match and we could never lose.

So that’s a taste of what the man is all about – keep an eye out for The Pundits’ interview next week!

Thanks to moyo Blouberg (@moyoSA) for allowing us to use their venue. And also, thanks to @nicgroom for agreeing to meet us, we are really looking forward to it.

  1. Here’s a couple of questions just of the top of my head:

Would you rather make out with a cactus or play for the Southern Kings?

Would you ever sell your soul and play in a pink jersey?

Would you rather watch the Notebook three times with four 16 year old girls or support the Australian Cricket team?

    Arsenal, Man United or Chelsea?

Who is your favourite Province player of all time?

That is all, well the only ones that’s appropriate and doesn’t involve midgets
